It is widely agreed on that closing the digital divide could “improve literacy, democracy, social mobility, economic equality and economic growth”. Taung is unfortunately one of the many rural areas in the country which is victim to the ‘digital divide’.
According to the 2011 census results, 83.5% of the population has no access to the internet. Of those who do, 10,3% access it from mobile phones, 1,3% from work and the rest from areas such as internet cafes, which are too few and far in between and unaffordable to many. One of the ways we are trying to contribute towards this cause is by setting up technology, learning and creativity (TLC) centers. These are safe and well-resourced spaces where young people can access tech, learn and explore their creativity.
Our goal is to establish TLC centres in strategic locations around Taung using existing and new infrastructure. These centres will benefit thousands of young people from this area by connecting them to the world beyond theirs and providing them with information and skills that will hopefully better and change the course of their lives and the broader community.
